It's about time Mexico went red (again - as it had during the term of Lázaro Cárdenas in the 1930's).

Mexico's president elect has spoken at length about how neoliberalism has not worked in Latin America, and she is correct. Even with unfettered corruption and nepotism, until Carlos Salinas and NAFTA, Mexico's governments managed to keep the urban poor fed with staples through subsidies (the rural population didn't fare as well), but when neoliberalism took hold and subsidies were removed, a wave of criminality swept through and made once-safe Mexico very dangerous indeed.

So we can thank neoliberalism for poverty, crime, cartels, over-population, and mass migration to the border with the u.s. to take slave jobs in the maquila (with the hope of crossing the border), among other social and economic ills.

It is odd that Western cultures which have tried to normalize complete sexual depravity are actually squeamish about simple anatomical facts of life that a small child can see...

Thanks, Amy.

We were in Koh Samui when my wife was pregnant with our second child, but I guess we missed those. Next time!

Best, Jeff
