Intriguing. A colleague of mine recently told me about this phenomenon. He said there are up to 100 Chinese people crossing the US border today. Most of this info is hard to find within China but many Chinese people are very resourceful. But he came to the same conclusions as you did: these are people who have nothing in China, maybe they went bankrupt, or they feel that poverty in America would be better than poverty in China for some reason (although I feel poverty on top of racism would be better than poverty without racism, but that's just me). Not to mention poverty is being alleviated at an alarming rate within China, despite accusations that the economy is getting worse. The countryside is actually experience the best benefits right now, whereas the people in the cities are feeling slighted by the gov't a bit -- urbanization is slowing down, and this is a deliberate choice as to diversify the economy and make sure farmland is not owned 99% by big corporations as it is in the west, and also create diverse opportunities for young people to work in their hometowns as opposed to moving to a big cities and being in the lowest rung of society as a delivery driver etc.
Needless to say, those smuggling themselves to the US at this point in time are very disconnected from reality. But I hope they find what they are looking for.
