Pictured above: we are very impressed with the social behavior of young Chinese, on the Mainland, both sexes, but especially Taiwanese adolescent males and older, who are downright chivalrous. Evelyne took one step into our airport shuttle bus and this young Taiwanese jumped up and offered her his seat. Young Taiwanese men are mostly monolithic in their dress: Japanese manga bangs on the forehead, black print t-shirts, baggy, to-the-knees black/white basketball shorts, sockless running shoes and often with a silver/gold necklace and/or bracelet. Evelyne’s airport knight was sporting long rapper pants, a left-earring and a thumb ring.
Be it Hong Kong, the Mainland or Taiwan Province, locals of all ages are MUCH MORE respectful of elders than in the West. Upon our return yesterday after one month in China, we were pleasantly surprised when a young African man offered to carry our bags up the stairs in the Paris metro, but that is the occidental exception, sorry to say.
